The primary terrace of the Yonaguni Monument measures roughly 150 meters in length and about 40 meters in width. Its flat surfaces and tiered edges have led some observers to compare it to a submerged pyramid base. The structure is carved from Miocene-age sandstone, a sedimentary rock prone to splitting along bedding planes. Earthquakes in the Ryukyu island chain create fractures that can intersect at near right angles.
