Karisoke’s name combines parts of Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke in Rwanda.
The Karisoke Research Center, founded by Dian Fossey in 1967, was established high in Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains at roughly 9,800 feet above sea level.
