Harpy Eagles specialize in hunting arboreal mammals, including howler and capuchin monkeys. Researchers have documented attacks where a Harpy Eagle bursts through foliage to seize a monkey during active movement. These ambushes occur dozens of meters above ground, where branches, leaves, and vines form a three-dimensional obstacle course. The eagle’s facial disc feathers help funnel sound toward its ears, improving prey detection in low visibility. The strike is fast and silent, often ending before nearby animals register danger.
