Condors rely on rising warm air currents called thermals to gain altitude.

California condors have been recorded flying at altitudes exceeding 15,000 feet above sea level. At such heights, oxygen levels are significantly lower than at ground level. Their large wings and efficient soaring behavior allow them to climb thermals to extreme elevations. From these heights, they can survey vast stretches of mountainous terrain. This altitude capacity enables them to travel between distant feeding grounds. Despite such aerial dominance, they remain vulnerable to threats on the ground. A poisoned carcass at valley level can still bring down a sky giant.
