The megamouth shark’s lips are unusually soft and flexible compared to most sharks, allowing extreme expansion during feeding.

Its feeding strategy mirrors that of baleen whales, not typical predatory sharks. A creature weighing over 1,000 kilograms survives almost entirely on organisms smaller than a fingernail, creating a dramatic scale paradox between predator size and prey size.

This adaptation challenges the stereotype of sharks as aggressive hunters and reveals convergent evolution between sharks and whales. Two completely different evolutionary lineages developed similar filtration systems to exploit microscopic food drifting through the open ocean.
