Diet analyses show that frilled sharks consume sizable squid species inhabiting the bathyal zone. Their flexible jaws and backward-pointing teeth allow them to engulf relatively large, soft-bodied prey in one decisive strike.

In total darkness more than a kilometer below the surface, encounters between predator and prey are rare and sudden. When they occur, the shark’s anatomical design ensures minimal second chances for escape.
By targeting squid that themselves are adapted to extreme depth, the frilled shark occupies a niche within a food web almost entirely hidden from human observation. It is a predator of predators in one of Earth’s least accessible ecosystems.
