During earthquakes in Cusco, colonial walls built atop Qorikancha have collapsed while the original Inca stone foundations remained standing.
Qorikancha, meaning "Golden Enclosure," served as the most sacred temple of the Inca Empire in the 15th century. Dedicated primarily to the sun god Inti, the complex featured finely cut stone masonry fitted without mortar. Spanish chroniclers described interior walls lined with gold panels reflecting sunlight. Agricultural figurines made of precious metals were arranged in ceremonial gardens. The temple anchored ritual life in the imperial capital. After the Spanish arrival in 1533, gold adornments were stripped and melted down. The Dominican convent of Santo Domingo was later constructed atop its foundations. Despite looting, the stone base remains intact. Religious architecture embodied political supremacy.
